We all are aware that a marathon was organized on Sunday, October 16, 2005 in the Netherlands. The event was sponsored by ING Bank of the Netherlands. So it was named “ING Amsterdam Marathon 2005″. There were 2.5km, 5km, 10km, 21.5km and 42km distances for different age groups to finish. The total number of participants was 16,000. (more…)

Securing a masters degree may not be a great news these days. But it is something Special for Subhash Ram Prajapati, and for Newars.

Son of renowned artist and the Chairman of Thimi Kala Parishad, Ganesh Ram Prajapati and a resident of Chapacho, Madhyapur Thimi, 25 years old Subhash Ram Prajapati has topped MA Nepal Bhasa Exams 2005 of Tribhuvan University and won the prestigious MOTILANI AWARD for the third time. Subhash has to his credit an extraordinary record of also topping IA and BA Nepal Bhasa Exams and winning MOTILANI AWARDS for both these achievements. He is now entitled and awaiting to receive Piyush Padak and Mahendra Vidya Bhushan.

Subhash is a multi-facet talent. In addition to Nepal Bhasa, he is also a scholar of culture and history. He is an IT professional and the CEO of Newatech Inc. Nepal. He is associated with Sanchar Nepal (P) Ltd (an information and communication technology consulting company). He is also associated with Jhee Muna (a non-profit organization with a mission to set up a television station for the protection and promotion of language, culture, traditions of Newars). He is active in dance and music. He acts and directs dramas. He is skilled in painting and photography. He is a good writer and has written a number of articles and reports concerning culture, history, traditions and ethnicity of Newars. He is also a good journalist and has been the editor of many Nepal Bhasa periodicals and publications.

Following students topped Nepal Bhasa Exams 2005 of Tribhuvan University Nepal. They were given away the prestigious Motilani Awards amid a function on October 8, 2005. Motilani Awards were instituted inthe service of Nepal Bhasa by an aged and uneducated lady Motilani Tamrakar out of her savings. (more…)

The 31st National Badminton Contest held at the Dhanagadhi covered hall concluded Saturday, October 01, 2005. Promising star Pooja Shrestha defeated defending national champion Sumina Shrestha and won Women’s Single Championship title. Pooja Shrestha and partners also won Women’s Double Championship and Mixed Double Championship titles. Emerging star Sujana Shrestha won U-19 Women’s Single Championship title in the contest.

Men’s Fin Weight - Kumar Manandhar won gold medal against Ashok Khadka

Men’s Light Weight - Ramesh Shrestha won gold medal against Pitambar Upreti
Women’s Light Weight - Radhika Shrestha won gold medal agaist Pabitra Pradhan

Dr. Sussie Shrestha has prestigiously passed MRCS (Member of the Royal College of Surgeons) examination held on 16 June 2005 at Edinburgh, UK. She is the first ever Nepali lady surgeon to have made this achievement and has thus set a national record in the history of medical profession in Nepal.

Daughter of Mr. Krishna Bhakta Shrestha (former Editor-in-Chief of Gorakhapatra Daily) and Prof. Dr. Pushpa Shrestha, (former member of National Planning Commission of Nepal) Dr. Sussie Shrestha also has to her credit the distinction of being one of the two first Nepali lady doctors to complete MS in General Surgery from Tribhuvan University in 2001. With these outstanding achievements and to have set a national record by becoming the first Nepali lady surgeon with MRCS grading, Dr. Susie Shrestha has added a valuable jewel to the pride of all Nepalis in general and we Newars in particular.

Dr. Roshan Kumar Shrestha has been honored with the Young Author Excellent Paper Award 2005 by the Japan Society of Hydrology & Water Resources, JSHWR. This award has been given for his paper entitled Performance Analysis of Different Meteorological Data and Resolutions Using MaScOD Hydrological Model Printed in Hydrological Processes. The award will be formally given on August 4, 2005 amid a function.

This award is given every year to one researcher under 35 who has published papers in JSHWR publications and its affiliated publications in that year. Eligible competitors for this award include associate professors, assistant professors, research associates, post doctoral researchers and company researchers under 35. This is the first time, this award has been given to a non-Japanese.

A native of Thimi, Khwopa, 33 year old Dr. Shrestha now works for a NASA funded project on global precipitation measurement by satelite observation, in the capacity of Research Associate in University of Minnesota, USA.
