The 11th Convention of Nepali Congress Party has concluded today September 02, 2005. The party’s constitution provides for direct election of the party president and 18 other members to the central working committee. 18 more are appointed by the president.

Of the 78 contestants for membership of the central working committee through election, 5 were from Newar community namely Chin Kazi Shrestha, Omkar Prasad Shrestha, Rabindra Lal Shrestha, Ram Krishna Tamrakar and Shyam Lal Shrestha. All of them lost the election.

There are chances that newly elected president Girija Prasad Koirala will appoint one or two Newars to the central working committee. But they will have to act exactly as the president wishes. Naturally, an appointee cannot have his/her independent voice, independent choice.

Newars have lost their position in the policy formulating, decision making and highest executive body of Nepali Congress Party, at least for next five years.

Newars are really lucky human beings. Our ancestors have handed us such a rich culture, such a glorious tradition where every family member has a special day once a year : Father’s Day (Bauyagu khwa swayegu), Mother’s Day (Mayagu khwa swayegu), Brother’s Day (Kija puja), Kid’s Day (Kumar puja, Kumari puja). We don’t know if any other human group than Newars on earth has such a unique culture, such a wonderful tradition, such a rich civilization. We are really proud to be Newars.

Tomorrow Nepal Sambat 1125 Gunlaga 29 (September 03, 2005) is our Father’s Day, BAUYAGU KHWA SWAYEGU NHI, our very special day on which we pay our utmost respect to our living fathers in recognition of their genes of which we are made, in recognition of the protection they provide to us, in recognition of every responsibility they take to rear us, in recognition of their teachings that make us worthy to live with dignity in the world.

BAUYAGU KHWA SWAYEGU NHIYA BHINTUNA. Happy Father’s Day to each and every lucky Newar who has a living father. Happy Father’s Day also to members of other communities who have adopted this unique culture and wonderful tradition of we Newars.

NESOCA Nepal wishes all the best of health and happiness to all responsible living fathers.
